Functional Skills Tutor (SEMH – Year 11)

The Opportunity

We are seeking a tutor to deliver structured, engaging sessions to a Year 11 student working towards Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths. The key focus of this role is to support engagement, build confidence, and help the student make meaningful progress toward achievable qualifications.

Due to the student’s SEMH needs, the ability to create a calm, supportive, and consistent learning environment is essential. Success in this role will come from balancing academic support with emotional understanding, helping the student develop both skills and resilience.

Contract/Position Details:

* Location – Ashington
* Position – Functional Skills Tutor (SEMH)
* Type of work – Contract
* Start date – ASAP
* Setting – Student’s home or local community setting (e.g. learning hub/library)
* Duration – Ongoing, until a suitable school or provision placement is secured
* Contract type – Temporary
* Hours – 15 hours per week
* Rate of pay – up to £30 per hour

Your role with us:

* Build a strong, trusting relationship to support engagement in learning
* Deliver Functional Skills Level 2 English and Maths sessions tailored to the learner
* Support the student’s SEMH needs, promoting emotional regulation and resilience
* Monitor progress and provide clear feedback to families and professionals
* Maintain accurate attendance records and complete weekly reports

To be eligible for this role, the Functional Skills Tutor must:

* Hold the right to work in the UK
* Hold an enhanced child barred list DBS certificate registered with the online update service or be willing to process a new application
* Be able to provide references covering the last two years
