What Does a Teaching Assistant Do During a Typical School Day?

On paper, a teaching assistant’s day looks pretty predictable. The bell goes at the same time each morning, lessons run to a set timetable, and break, lunch and home time arrive like clockwork.

But ask any TA and they’ll tell you no two days are ever the same.

One morning you might be helping a reception class learn through play. That afternoon, you could be running a small maths group with Year 6 pupils preparing for their SATs. A child who breezed through yesterday’s reading might need extra encouragement today. A lesson plan might change at the last minute, or a pupil might have a breakthrough moment you’ll remember for years.

That’s the reality of the role. The structure might stay the same, but children can change so much from one day to the next, and so do the challenges that come with them. Great teaching assistants are the ones who are ready for whatever the day brings… good or bad.

Much of a TA’s most important work goes largely unnoticed. While the teacher leads the class, the teaching assistant works alongside them to quickly spot any pupils who have fallen behind. They are the eyes at the back of the teacher’s head. It’s the TA’s job to think on their feet and help adapt tasks so every pupil gets the support they need.

So, what does a teaching assistant do during a typical school day? Honestly, there’s no such thing as a typical day, and that’s exactly what makes the role so special!
