Reasons to Teach in New Zealand in 2025!

Are you an overseas teacher looking for a fresh start and an exciting new role? New Zealand offers breathtaking scenery, a welcoming culture, and a respected education system. In 2025, the NZ Government continues to offer a $10,000 Overseas Relocation Grant (ORG) to help qualified overseas-trained teachers make the move.

Why Teach in New Zealand in 2025?

New Zealand provides an ideal mix of work-life balance, outdoor lifestyle, and strong education values. As an international teacher, you can enjoy:

  • A supportive and inclusive school system

  • Great pay and clear career development pathways

  • Natural beauty and a peaceful lifestyle

With relocation support available, there’s never been a better time to teach in New Zealand.

What Is the Overseas Relocation Grant?

The Overseas Relocation Grant (ORG) is a financial incentive offered by the Ministry of Education to attract qualified teachers from overseas. It supports you in covering costs associated with moving to New Zealand to teach.

What Expenses Are Covered?

Teachers moving to New Zealand can claim up to NZD $10,000 for eligible expenses, including:

  • Return flights for you and your immediate family

  • Temporary accommodation upon arrival

  • Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand registration costs

  • Visa application fees

  • Shipping and moving household goods

Note: All claims must be backed by valid receipts or invoices.

Who Can Apply for the ORG in 2025?

To be eligible for the grant, you must:

  • Be a qualified overseas-trained teacher

  • Hold a valid New Zealand Work or Resident Visa (or be a citizen)

  • Have a current practising certificate from the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand

  • Begin a full-time role between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2025

  • Have a 12-month or longer full-time contract in a state or state-integrated school or licensed early learning centre

  • Not have worked in a New Zealand education role in the past 12 months

  • Apply for the grant within 90 days of starting your teaching role

Important: The ORG is capped annually and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Early applications are highly recommended. Learn more on the Education Workforce website.

2025 Visa Update: Straight to Residence for Teachers

As of 26 March 2025, overseas primary and intermediate teachers and Māori-medium educators are now included on New Zealand’s Green List – Straight to Residence visa pathway. This means eligible teachers can now apply directly for New Zealand residency as soon as they secure a job offer—removing the wait time previously required.
