On Tuesday 10th May Prospero Teaching ran accredited CPD for teachers that dealt with the hows, whys and wherefores of Safeguarding

Free Accredited CPD for Teachers

The Calm Before the Storm

So why does Prospero Teaching take Safeguarding training so seriously?

This is because every organisation working with young people is obliged to have a safeguarding policy in line with the guidelines laid out by the Government in their official paper of July 2014 entitled Safeguarding Children and Young People, and we send numerous teachers and support staff into UK schools every term day of the year.

According to the Government’s Working Together To Safeguard Children document of March 2015, safeguarding is defined as

  • Protecting children from maltreatment
  • Preventing impairment of children’s health or development
  • Ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care
  • Taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes

The Charity Commission in their policy paper of 2015 defined the teacher’s role in safeguarding young people as follows

  • To maintain a safe environment for students to learn in
  • To behave as a professional, responsible adult at all times; maintaining clear boundaries as an adult in a position of care
  • To understand the four areas of abuse
  • To know how to recognise child safeguarding concerns
  • To know how to address and refer your child safeguarding concerns
  • To promote children’s safety and welfare eg with regards to health and safety, anti-bullying, protection of children online and photography
  • To always put the child’s needs first, take all safeguarding concerns seriously and not be deterred by the worry of displeasing a colleague or a senior member of staff

Additionally, the NSPCC reported in their 2014 document Child Abuse and Neglect in the UK

  • The conviction rate of child abuse against the number of victims was only 2.8% (2012-13), so it is important to report any suspicions or signs to the designated Safeguarding Officer in order to compile a log of evidence for possible future convictions.

The objectives of the session were therefore to train teachers to be able to

  • Understand their Safeguarding responsibilities
  • How to create a safe environment for young people in their care
  • How to recognise the signs of maltreatment and abuse of young people in their care
  • And the protocols for dealing with these occasions should they arise

Prospero Teaching doesn’t just have lots of teaching jobs in the UK, we also run free accredited CPD throughout the year. You can see the other CPD events for teachers and teaching assistants we have planned for the 2015/2016 academic year at our CPD Event Calendar.

Did you attend our Safeguarding training and if so what did you think of it? Maybe you have some safeguarding top tips for other teachers and teaching assistants out there? If so, please do share them with the Prospero Community  🙂
